Make a moving file, keep all your moving papers, receipts, estimates together
Get estimates (professional movers, or a moving truck rental company, storage, carpet cleaning, etc..) - see our rates
Sort through estimates, asking questions like: are they insured? are there any additional costs? Our they reliable?
Contact service providers and let them know your change of address. Telephone (home and cellular), television, internet, electricity, gas, mail, insurance, etc..
Discuss what items to dispose of, and arrange recycle/disposal or donate them to a local charity.
Make arrangements for your medical records, and school records to be transferred if required.
Check into packing materials (boxes, tape, wardrobe boxes) - Find out about our moving boxes and other moving supplies.
Plan to take the day off of work or school
Start packing items you won’t use in the next few weeks. (decorations, books, photos, artwork, etc.)
Be as detailed as you can when you are labeling your boxes, it will save you time in the long run.
Make sure that any prescriptions are filled, and taken care of before move date.
Plan our your groceries so you don’t have to pack as much food for the move.
If you have small children arrange for someone to watch them during moving day.
Continue packing, pack separately items you may need right away.
Confirm moving details (correct contact information and address) and time estimates with your movers, make sure you have the paperwork.
Prepare for your moving expenses. Movers, food, hotels if necessary
Defrost your fridge and freezer
Make sure that you have any tools available you may need. (we bring a tool kit with us, but better safe than sorry)
Set aside any items you may want to move yourself.
Take apart beds, and any other furniture requiring it (or have us do it for you).
When movers arrive, take them on a tour through the house and show what things are being taken, as well as what will be disposed of.
Double check that we have the right address you are moving too (again better safe than sorry).
Once finished loading, do a final walk through of your home to ensure nothing is left behind (checking all closets, etc.)
Check to make sure your utilities are working, and do your initial inspection/walk-through of your new home.
Meet us at your new place and show us where you would like your belongings.
After your move is finished, complete a walk-through with your movers, confirming things are in the correct rooms. Plus, let them know anything you would like disposed of. Then let us know your preferred method of payment.
Please let us know what you thought of our service (here is our contact page) or let us know of any changes we should make to this checklist to help others in the future. Thanks.
